Job Summary
Independent of direct supervision, provide multi-disciplinary veterinary technical support for the Companion Exotic Pet (CAPE) Service of the VMTH. Work with Companion exotic species of animals including birds, reptiles, exotic small mammals, wildlife, aquatic and zoo animals. Provide nursing and anesthesia technical support. Set-up, teach and perform medical treatments per clinician orders. Maintain and clean all service areas. Quasi-instructor to veterinary students on techniques, policy and procedures. RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date. - Currently possess, or obtain within 6 months of date of hire, a current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
- No educational requirement.
- Experience performing anesthesia & monitoring/assessing, maintaining and recovering anesthetized patients of companion exotic species.
- Experience assessing normal anatomy and physiology of a variety of companion exotic species to identify abnormal physical signs and symptoms and respond accordingly. Experience in handling and restraint techniques for companion exotic species.
- Experience in calculating & administering medications via standard routes for companion exotic species.
- Skill to independently provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience setting up and operating radiographic equipment to produce diagnostic films for companion exotic species.
- Experience placing and maintaining intravascular and urinary catheters for companion exotic species.
- Experience obtaining a wide variety of diagnostic samples and providing therapeutic treatments to companion exotic species.
- Experience instructing and monitoring students.

Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.
