Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Position Highlights:

  • Position: Breastfeeding Peer Counselor
  • Location: Evanston Hospital, Evanston IL
  • Full Time/Part Time: Full Time
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 0700-1530

POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are currently seeking a certified Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to provide basic breastfeeding education, encouragement, and support to patients throughout their pregnancy and post-partum period. This is a full-time position and is benefits eligible. Hours will be scheduled Monday through Friday on the day shift.

What you will do:

  • Interact with pregnant and post-partum patients to educate about the benefits of breastfeeding, support initial breastfeeding attempts, and offer encouragement in the post-partum period
  • Provide appropriate information about the benefits of breastmilk feeding, and help patients to overcome common barriers to breastfeeding success.
  • Work with the team of care providers to ensure that clinical concerns are documented, and to ensure that patients obtain referrals to the lactation specialist, physician, nurse, or other specialists as appropriate.
  • Maintain relationships with patients after discharge for continuing follow up, as appropriate.

What you will need:

  • Education :A level of knowledge acquired through completion of a general high school diploma program or equivalent.
  • Certification: Certification from a recognized Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program, i.e. HealthConnect One or Loving Support (WIC).
  • Experience: 1-2 years' experience in breastfeeding counseling and management through previous position as a breastfeeding peer counselor, or through additional lactation training and experience preferred.
  • Experience at a hospital or clinic preferred.
  • Computer knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office applications; typing 30 words per minute required.
  • Good customer service skills with ability to communicate in a professional, courteous and tactful manner and relate to persons of diverse ethnic and cultural background
